Isabel Ruiz Mallén is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) and coordinates the Urban Transformation and Global Change Laboratory (TURBA) research group at UOC together with Hug March. Within TURBA, she is leading a research line on “Co-creation towards sustainable transformations” that she created as a “Ramón y Cajal” Research Fellow in 2017-2022.

As a researcher, her R&I activity focuses on the study of collaborative knowledge creation processes and the co-production of innovative practices toward critical sustainability education, climate resilience, biodiversity conservation and social equity in different learning contexts. In particular, she analyses how different actors perceive, experience, share and engage in learning about sustainability and how they interact with their environment, in order to respond to current socio-environmental challenges.

Her main research interests are transformative learning processes in the field of environmental education, participatory and innovative methodologies in science education (STEAM), and co-creation in the fields of climate resilience and environmental governance.

With the JPI ERA-NET project she has recently coordinated, COOLSCHOOLS (coolschools.eu), her research activity also focuses on exploring the co-benefits of implementing nature-based solutions in school grounds and surrounding environments for adapting to climate change while providing better learning opportunities with nature as co-teacher.
